UTP: Product Design is the equivalent to the first year of your undergraduate Product Design degree. Upon completion of the programme you will be eligible to progress* to the second year of the Bachelor of Product Design degree.

- UC is leading the way with its multidisciplinary Bachelor of Product Design. Product Design combines creative design, science, engineering, and business studies. Product designers plan and develop items for use in homes, businesses, and industry.
- Chemical-based products that are used by everyone in an every day basis contain chemical, physical, and functional properties which have been specially determined and envisaged by its manufacturers at the start of the product’s formulation. By specialising in Chemical, Natural and Healthcare Formulation, you get to gain the skills to create practical goods for every day consumption, such as personal care products, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceutical products.

Subjects
UTP Product Design is a set programme of study. Students will study seven courses from the following subject areas. Note: Not all subjects will be offered every semester and failure to pass a required course will result in a delay in completion of studies.
Compulsory academic subjects for all majors:
- Product Design 1
- Mathematics
- Foundation of Engineering
- Fundamentals of Management
Additional courses for specific major
Chemical, Natural and Healthcare Product Formulation:
- Chemistry
- Cellular Biology and Biochemistry
- Principles of Marketing
All UTP students are required to complete compulsory study skills programmes (fee free).

**UCIC’s University Transfer Programme: Product Design is a NZQA approved Training Scheme. This does not lead to a formal qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. The University Transfer Programme: Science may be used for progression requirements under a pathway arrangement between UCIC and UC, subject to final approval by the University of Canterbury.
